Saalumarada Thimmakka and her Journey to become the mother of 8000 trees.
Saalumarada Thimmakka has awarded Padma Shri for her most known work of planting 385 banyan trees along 4 kilometres long highway and also planted other 8000 trees. No formal education, casual labour and poor but this circumstances couldn't stop Thimmakka to make it happen. This is the story of a lady who taught us the lack of money and bad circumstances can't stop you from spreading goodness.
The Journey
Thimmakka and her husband both were labour and they couldn't have child. They lost the hope for child so in the lieu of child they started planting banyan trees on both sides of highway in Karnataka. They started with little but after their continuous plantation the number were increased. Watering and taking care of these trees became a big question for Thimmakka and her husband. Despite of lack of money and facilities they continued taking care of plants manually. They used to walk for a distance of 4 kilometres carrying 4 pails of water with them.
Due the persistent work of Thimmakka and her husband the number reaches to 385 trees besides streched 4 kilometres highway and also another 8000 trees on other places.
How has world influenced from Thimmakka ?
Even having no formal education, no financial strength and increasing age even then they achieved what they thought for the world and this influenced and motivated many other organisations and environmentalists whom are trying to protect nature.
A U.S. environmental organization based in Los Angeles, and Okland, California registered their name as ' Thimmakka's Resources for Environmental Education. '
Her real name is Aalada Marada Thimmakka but world knows her as Saalumarada Thimmakka. Saalumarada means rows of trees in kannad.
Padma Shri was awarded to Thimmakka in 2019. Also conferred with National Citizen's Award. She has also awarded with 14 other awards. Central University of Karnataka has been announced honorary doctorate for Thimmakka in 2020. BBC recognised her as one of the most influential woman on earth. She is in the list of top 100 influential womans.
Still fighting
Thimmakka's husband Chikkanna died in 1995. She is now 110 plus year old and still fighting against afforestation. Her foster son B.N. Umesh now running Prithvi Bachao movement and owned a nursery and taking forward her mission.
The assest value of the 385 trees at both sides of highway is now 1.5 million rupees and these are now shelter of several birds and provide shade to travellers.
